![]() ![]() To The Moon: Everything's Alright Not 100% sure if this already plays during the game or only in the credits? To The Moon has an absolutely fantastic soundtrack in general. Portal 1 and 2: Still Alive / Want you gone Fantastic examples of using songs with lyrics in a more comedic way. Season 2 had some great credit songs as well, namely In The Water and In The Pines. The Walking Dead Season 1: Take us Back When I finished this game and was listening to the song, I was bawling my eyes out. Hearing the song would have no doubt gotten me super excited for the end of the game. Here are my favorite examples:ĭishonored: Honor for All I love the song, but I wonder if it wouldn't have been cooler to use it in preparation for the final mission instead of the credits. That's how much I love that Compass scene.īayonetta: Fly me to the Moon I haven't finished Bayonetta, but pretty sure the one song with lyrics plays during fighting.īastion/ACIV The only other examples I can think of in this category are the songs mentioned above, where the singing starts in a cutscene and then plays on through gameplay or credits.Ī game's end credits seem to be a more popular place to use songs with lyrics. So you gallop through the snowy forrest as fast as you can, filled with love and longing for characters you've not even seen yet, yet afraid that they might not be there, while the lyrics go 'Now I know, the only compass that I need is the one that leads back to you' I teared up writing that, and it's been like 5 years if not more since I played RDR. And the moment they let you go and tell you your wife and son are waiting, 'Compass' starts playing. You aren't sure if they'll actually be at home or if the guys killed them long ago and just used you. They've not appeared in the game until now and you (the player) don't even know what you look like, but you know how incredibly much you (the character) loves them, from a variety of tidbits where John or other people mention his wife. Spoilers for the ending of Red Dead Redemption Compass plays when the guys who held your wife and child hostage tell you they're back at home waiting for you. You don't really know where to go, you don't know where you are, and you will ride through the countryside for several minutes until you reach the next settlement, while 'Far Away' is playing. Spoilers for the middle of Red Dead Redemption Far Away plays when you first arrive in Mexico by boat. ![]() There are two more instances of songs playing in RDR (Bury me not on the lone Prairie, and Dead Man's Gun), but Far Away and Compass really take the cake. Red Dead Redemption: Far Away/Compass So, these two songs are probably my all time favorite use of music in any video game ever. ![]() I love the song that's used in the trailer and I expect a use of music comparable to that of Bastion.ĭragon Age Inquisition: ? I haven't actually played this one either, but I know that there is a scene where some of the characters sing a song together. Transistor: ? Haven't gotten around to playing it, but should finally do so. I missed this damn guitar and only heard the song in the credits, but still, cool example.īastion: Build that Wall/Mother I'm here Bastion is somewhere in between the 'in-universe' and 'played over' categories for me: There's a character whom we assume to be the one singing, but the songs continue to play over gameplay, if I recall correctly. There's the option to pick it up, which results in your companion Elizabeth singing a song. I love this song in general (there's a version by Ed Sheeran, and one was sung in The Walking Dead at some point) though, so YMMV.īioShock Infinite: Will the Circle be unbroken In BioShock Infinite, you can find a Guitar at some point. Might be because I thought the writing of the lyrics was a bit clumsy, maybe because they wrote the Polish version first and only later translated it.Īssassin's Creed IV Black Flag: The Parting Glass This one song somehow managed to make me cry even though I didn't care for most of the characters for the bigger part of the game. I like the song, and I'm a huge fan of the Witcher and Geralt/Yen shipper, but for whatever reason, this song didn't have the emotional effect on me that most of my other examples had.
